Why Disney again?
On my most recent trip to Walt Disney World, I noticed a woman proudly wearing a button that said "10th Visit". Which made me wonder - how many times have I been here?
A lot. A lot of times. I don't know how many times at this point.
But I don't care - all I care about is when I'm going back!
But why? Why Disney again?
I'm glad you asked!
Nobody Does Customer Service Better
Every time I've been to Disney World, I've experienced incredible, unexpected customer service. This last time I went, I went to pay for my breakfast at my resort with a gift card. (To avoid post-vacation-credit-card-shock, I had saved up gift cards all year.) The card wouldn't scan and was coming up as 'Zero Dollars'. Great. I reached for another card—same thing. Instead of sending me back to my room to get another form of payment (I only had the gift cards with me.), the Disney cast member (Disney's term for employee.) told me to go and eat my breakfast: "When you're done, go to guest services and get your gift cards sorted. If you have time, come back and pay. Or not. But please, right now, go and enjoy your breakfast." I was stunned. I did enjoy my breakfast. I did get it all sorted at guest service. (They told me to charge everything to my room and then pay off the balance with my gift cards at the end of my trip. It worked brilliantly.) And I did go back and pay for my breakfast.
Did you know that Disney's approach to customer service is so exceptional that they have a university you can attend to learn how to apply their philosophies and ideas?
No matter what happens on your Disney vacation, I can guarantee you will be well taken care of by the staff. Erm, cast members.
Nobody Does Spectacle Better
Fireworks. Grand orchestral music. Projections. Lights.
Nobody does it better than Disney.
I think it's because I work with authentic theatre work - from the soul, connect with humanity, small stages of Canada work - that when I get to Disney, I want big, loud and bright! And they deliver!
My favourite show there is called Fantasmic. It tells the story of Mickey and how evil villains (i.e. ALL the Disney villains ever!) are trying to take over and control his imagination for the forces of evil. (Spoiler Alert: They don't win.) The show's set is a huge mountain with a lake in front. The lake is set on fire. Actors rappel down the mountainside. Evil characters grow on cherry pickers high in the sky. Scenes are projected onto water that is being shot up out of the lake. It's absolute technical wizardry. And it's incredible. I cheer like a little kid throughout the show. It's spectacle as it should be. And it keeps me coming back for more.
Disney Strives To Be Better
What I love about Disney is that they're continually striving to be better, do better, and do more. Nothing is achieved and then 'left as is' to grow dust.
And that came directly from Walt. He constantly reminded his team that they should be looking to the future, looking to tomorrow and looking for ways to improve the company's offerings. (The entire Silly Symphony series of shorts was the company experimenting with new animation technology and ideas.)
The first time I saw a tablet being used was at Disney World. The first time I used a card rather than a key to open my hotel room and the first time I checked in on my phone, rather than at the front desk, was at Disney. To say nothing of their outstanding attractions.
They strive to do and be better.
Despite walking over 20,000 steps a day in the parks under the scorching Florida sun, Disney inspires me to do and be better. So, I come back home inspired and excited to return to my routines, work, and family.
Striving to be and do better.
Immediately planning my next trip back to the magic that my heart loves.
