The New Me(s)
Hello from Nova Scotia!
These first few months of 2025 have zipped past, and if you're curious, I'll explain why.
In the opening chapter of Anne of Green Gables, Lucy Maud Montgomery describes Mrs. Rachel Lynde as follows: "She was a notable housewife; her work was always done and well done; she “ran” the Sewing Circle, helped run the Sunday-school, and was the strongest prop of the Church Aid Society and Foreign Missions Auxiliary."
I first read the book when I was nine, and it was then that I first fell in love with women who wear multiple hats of responsibility.
When we moved from Ontario to Nova Scotia in June of last year, I knew that my career wouldn't look the same as it had, but I didn't know what exactly it would look like either. I was only clear about one thing: I wanted to make a difference in our new community.
After much reflection and research, I finally decided to resume my education in real estate. While living in Ontario, I had started to complete the courses and exams necessary to get my licence. But of course, that didn't make sense, once we knew we were moving. So, I enrolled in the Nova Scotia Association of Realtors online course and studied harder than I had in years.
I wrote the exam in January and while I was waiting for my results I decided to treat myself to my favourite hand cream and skin care line from Mary Kay.
While perusing their website, I looked into becoming a consultant. I signed up.
Meanwhile, I received my results from the realtor's exam. I passed with flying colours and immediately began the process of signing on with ReMax Nova.
Meanwhile, a full-time position had come up, working for the town I live in. The official title is Municipal Physical Activity Leader, which means I'm to create, lead and organize events and activities that encourage healthy movement and connection with others. It includes organizing the summer soccer program and creating an equipment loan program for things like snowshoes and tennis rackets. But it also means I'm to organize and support artistic and recreational events and activities as well.
It was an opportunity to serve and make a difference in my community.
I'm honoured to say that I was given the job. On my first day, I was handed a key to the town's theatre and told I would manage it as part of my job. Oh, and my daily commute? A three-minute walk to the town hall and a further 30-second walk across the street to the theatre.
When I went out with my parents for lunch to celebrate, my mother asked: "So which of your three new careers are we celebrating?"
All that to say, it appears that I've become exactly like Mrs. Rachel Lynde: "A real estate agent, Mary Kay Consultant and recreation director who manages a theatre."
Do I have it all in hand yet? Haha no! Not by a long shot!
But I'm having the time of my life figuring it out.
And it's been a long time since I've felt as happy and fulfilled as I do now.
Being the new me(s).
