The Spirit of Maud Theatre Company creates and produces shows based on the writing and the life of Lucy Maud Montgomery. Montgomery is the famed Canadian author who wrote Anne of Green Gables, plus 21 other novels, including Rilla of Ingleside and Blue Castle.

Our Goals

To celebrate and elevate the legacy of Lucy Maud Montgomery. By creating shows based on her writing and her life, the company provides opportunities for long time fans to celebrate their love for her work and learn more about Montgomery’s incredible life story and contribution to Canadian history.

The second goal is to provide as many performing opportunities as possible for Artists who identify as female. Maud wrote the most extraordinary and indelible female characters. It is our honour to feature extraordinary and brilliant female artists to portray them.

The Spirit of Maud ’s History

The Spirit of Maud Theatre Company started by mounting shows in the Parish Hall in Norval, Ontario. Maud lived in Norval (about 20min from Brampton) from 1926 to 1935. Her husband was the minister at two Presbyterian churches in the area. Maud frequently performed in the Parish Hall as part of various plays and events. You can see her on the stage here - in the of the front row. (dressed in black) The company has also staged productions in Leaskdale and during the 2020 lockdown in Ontario, filmed a version of Conversations With The Ladies Of Lucy Maud Montgomery.
